Ingredients:
Here's an overview of what you'll need to make this Air Fryer Cod recipe, but keep scrolling for the full recipe amounts.
- Cod Fillets: Look for fresh or frozen cod fillets. If the cod is frozen, thaw it in the fridge overnight. You'll need 4-6-ounce portions without the skin, either cod loins or cod fillets. You can use any variety of cod, including Alaskan cod, Pacific cod, and black cod, also known as sablefish. The fish should not have a stinky or fishy aroma. To prep the fish, pat it dry with a paper towel. Sometimes frozen cod can retain water, so make sure to dry it and remove any excess moisture to help it cook and taste better.
- Olive Oil Spray: I like to use an olive oil spray when cooking in the air fryer to keep the calories down. This is one that I like. You can also use avocado oil. You can also drizzle the fish with olive oil or brush on melted butter.
- Seafood Seasoning: I like to use this Everglades Fish & Chicken Seafood Seasoning or Seafood Magic, but you can also use Old Bay Seasoning or your favorite seasoning. You can also use Blackening Seasoning or Cajun Seasoning. You can also mix together in a small bowl your own with garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika or chili powder.
- Salt & Black Pepper: To taste
- Garnish: Lemon slices and fresh parsley

Instructions:
This is an overview of the instructions to make this Air Fryer Cod, but the full, detailed, printable recipe is below in the recipe card.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.
- While the air-fryer is heating, pat the cod well with paper towels.
- Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Put the cod fillets in the air fryer basket and spray with olive oil. Sprinkle the fish with the fish seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- Air fry for 8-10 minutes, or until the fish is white and flaky.
- Serve hot with fresh lemon and parsley.
Air Fryer Cooking Tips:
- Don't Flip It: Some air fryer cod recipes have you flip the fish, but I don't think that is necessary, and you risk breaking it.
- Don't crowd the fish: Make sure the fish is spaced out in the air fryer in a single layer, not overlapping. If you make more than a few servings, you might need to work in batches.
- How is it done? The cod is done when it turns white and flakes easily with a fork. Cooking time can vary depending on the air fryer and the thickness of the fish. The FDA recommends cooking fish until the internal temperature is 145 degrees Fahrenheit using a meat thermometer. I pull mine out a bit before then, closer to 137 degrees, so it doesn't get tough, but do that with caution if you have health issues.

Variations
I love this Air Fryer Cod recipe as written, but here are some fun variations.
- Make it in the Oven: If you want to bake your cod in the oven, try this recipe for Baked Blackened Cod or Parmesan-Crusted Cod.
- Make it Spicy: Add an extra sprinkle of cayenne pepper to bring up the heat.
- Mix Up the Fish: You can easily make this recipe with almost any white fish. Also, try my Blackened Mahi Mahi, Blackened Swordfish, or Blackened Salmon. You can also try halibut, haddock, snapper, seabass, or grouper.
- Mix up the Seasoning: You can easily adjust the seasoning mix or spices to give the air fryer flounder a different flavor, depending on the meal you are making. Here are some ideas from my collection of homemade spice blends.
FAQ
Storage & Leftovers
You can store any leftover cod in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I think it's best enjoyed freshly cooked out of the oven, but it does keep. To reheat it, put it in the microwave for about 1 minute.
Freezing
I would not re-freeze the cooked fish because it would turn mushy.
How long does frozen cod take in the air fryer?
It is better to thaw the fish before cooking it, but if you are in a pinch and need to use frozen cod, it will take just a few minutes longer to cook. The frozen cod will need to cook for 12-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish.
